Recycling gloucester, more recycling refuse collection

Why we must look to change our waste collection services:- The city has tough recycling targets to meet over the coming years and failure to do so could result in a £3 million fine, which will be passed on to the council tax payers in Gloucester.
- Landfill space is running out. Hempsted landfill site is due to close in 2012; the other landfill site in the county is due to close in 2014, meaning that is 8 years time, we will have no where to dispose of our rubbish in the county.
- Recycling is more cost-effective with income from recycling credits and sale of material to reprocessors used to help off-set collection costs. Unlike refuse collections, which is money down the drain.
- If we continue to invest in extending our recycling services so residents can recycle more, it will mean that very little material will need to be collected and sent to landfill. Collection systems need to be realigned to reflect this shift.
- Landfilling rubbish is bad for the environment. Large amounts of methane are released from rotting rubbish adding to the global warming problem and toxic liquids that pollute our water.
- Many items we throw away each day are a valuable resource and should not be viewed as rubbish.
- Gloucester City Council aim to recycle 50% of your rubbish by 2009. We need your help to achieve this!
- If we collected a much wider range of materials for recycling, then only a very small amount of material would actually need to go in the bin - this could be a little as 10% of the entire waste you produce.
