New Market Site Opens

New Market Site Opens

The city’s new purpose built market site opens this month.

Final preparations have been completed at the Hempsted Meadows site for its opening on July 13.

The site will be one of the largest in the county with 199 pitches for market and car boot traders.

Located on the new south west bypass - which 25,000 vehicles pass daily - it has free parking for around 400 cars and a regular bus service to and from Gloucester.

The market is anticipated being a huge hit with massive interest building up over the past few months. It forms part of the £1 billion regeneration of the city and will add to its vibrancy and vitality.

The new site will maintain Gloucester’s ancient market tradition, which dates back to the Romans.

Once opened the market will operate every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday with the car boot alongside it on Wednesdays and Sundays.

Ken Lakin, the council’s markets manager, commented: “There is a real sense of excitement and anticipation. We have had lots of
calls from traders keen to take pitches. The car boot will also be a great place to sell or pick up a bargain.

"This will undoubtedly become the premiere open market and car boot site for the county. It is a great location."

With the barn owl centre at a new site opposite the market and
improvements to the nature trail opening up previously inaccessible countryside, a trip to the market will be a great family day out.

OPENING HOURS

Wednesday - Market and car boot - 8am-1pm
Saturday - Traders’ market - 9am-4pm
Sunday - Market and car boot - 9am-1pm
Traders and booters may arrive
one hour before opening.

The Gloucester Guildhall pavement café re-opens for business in July following its successful trial run last year.

Guildhall Manager, Andrew Mitchell-Stead, commented: "We had lots of very good comments from customers last year. It is a great location for a pavement café and provides an ideal setting to take a break from shopping and sightseeing."

The café is located directly outside the Guildhall in Eastgate Street It will be open until the end of August from 10am - 3pm each day, offering up a fresh summer menu including sandwiches, baguettes, wraps, salads, teas, coffees, fruit juices, cakes and more.
