Gloucester has won gold in the Heart of England in Bloom awards.  This the second consecutive year that Gloucester has won gold.

Entered in the Small City category, the award is given to exceptional achievers who have demonstrated a consistently high standard in all areas of the judging criteria and objectives of Britain in Bloom.

The judging takes place in July of each year with the judges taken on a three-hour tour of the city meeting local residents, business people and dignitaries along the way.

The judges were particularly impressed with the outstanding display of floral features, the War Memorial, the cleanliness of the City centre, Barnwood Arboretum, Robinswood Country Park, Westgate Industrial estate and community involvement.

Suggestions for improvement include better maintenance of street furniture, more green recycling and refurbishing the gates and railings at Gloucester Park.

Andrew Lewis, Cabinet Member for the Environment, commented: "The Gloucester in Bloom Committee are delighted with the gold award. The City and its people have been through a tough time with the recent floods and this is a real boost. This shows Gloucester is a beautiful city and people should be proud of this award."

The Gloucester in Bloom group has worked with communities across the city this year with projects as diverse as the Tuffley Scouts planting on roundabouts, the street regeneration competition and the schools bargeware competition.

More details of Gloucester in bloom follow below:

The Gloucester in Bloom committee organises Gloucester's entry into the Heart of England in Bloom competition. This is the regional level of the Britain in Bloom competition with category winners going on to represent their region in the following years Britain in Bloom competition.

The judging takes place in July of each year with the judges taken on a three hour tour of the city by members of the committee. The route differs from year to year and takes in the city's impressive floral displays as well as a school, community projects, new park developments and the city centre; meeting local residents, business people and dignitaries along the way.

Gloucester traditionally enters the small city category and in 2006 won a GOLD award (Bronze, Silver and Silver Gilt are also awarded).

This year, as part of Gloucester in Bloom, we are running a new competition for 2007, kindly supported by the National Waterways Museum. We had a fantastic response from schools for the last competition we can and are hoping to build on this success. The theme for this year is:

BARGEWARE

Celebrating the history of the Docks and British Waterways, we are inviting you to produce an item of bargeware and to plant-up this item with your choice of bedding. To give you a better idea, we have included some pictures of bargeware that are currently on display in the National Waterways Museum.

We would like to have one entry per class, and as many classes in your school can take part as you wish. This is a great chance for children to be imaginative, whilst perhaps learning some history on the docks and our nation's waterways along the way!

How to make your bargeware
1. Find any item that has a hole sufficiently large enough to contain bedding; this could be a large jug, saucepan or small table with deep base - basically an item you can think of that is not so big that it can't be moved!
2. Paint the item in typical bargeware style (see pictures for inspiration)
3. Use a clear varnish/gloss to finish

Planting-up your bargeware
1. We will be holding a planting day, which will be announced later in 2007 - children can come and learn about different plants and have a wide selection of items to choose from to plant-up their bargeware. This planting session will be arranged shortly before Gloucester is due to be judged so that all the fantastic entries can be on display for the national judges.

2. Alternatively, we can give you a £10 garden voucher to assist in purchasing plants, flowers and/or seeds.

We will be looking to collect your entry around the end of June - we will write to all participating schools in mid-June to confirm exact date of collection, so that you can ensure your bedding looks in tip-top condition ready for judging.

All entries will be displayed at the Docks, for the judges of Gloucester in Bloom to view.

Trophies will be awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place and all participating classes will receive a certificate.
